Chappell Roan
In 2024, Chappell Roan didn’t release a new album, but it didn’t matter. Her rise was unstoppable. From the “Midwest Princess” merch explosion to a celebrated embrace of vinyl culture, Roan became inescapable. Her “Pink Pony Club” 7-inch for Record Store Day and the anniversary reissue of The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess flew off the shelves. With intimate record store gs in mid-market cities and a growing fanbase, she was, in truth, the only real choice for Artist of the Year.

Brat
CHARLI XCX
What more can be said about Brat? No album in 2024 had such a cultural chokehold — it owned an entire season. For nearly a decade, hyperpop producers and artists have been pushing boundaries and embracing the playful pastiche of modern pop. Brat feels like the genre’s platonic ideal: chart-topping, sugary-sweet, sickeningly sour, and visually blinding. From teasing a return to club roots in pre-release interviews to spitting venom on “Von Dutch,” to stirring conspiracies with “Girl, So Confusing,” and then confirming said rumors on the remix, Charli gave us everything — vinyl, cassettes, remix records. And we devoured it.

Two Star & The Dream Police
MK.GEE
Longtime fans of Mk.gee knew this breakout was inevitable. Since 2017, he’s been sharpening his sound with singles, an EP, and songwriting credits for Omar Apollo, Dijon, and Kacy Hill. Now, with his debut album, Two Star & The Dream Police, his moment has arrived. While many rising artists are mining inspiration from the ‘90s, Mk.gee ventures into something decidedly less cool. Beneath his Tascam-soaked guitar tones introverted aura, and hawk-cry samples lie subtle but unmistakable nods to Phil Collins and the Police. And yet, no one else sounds quite like him.

Songs of a Lost World
The Cure
In November, the Cure made their long-awaited return with Songs of a Lost World, the follow-up to 4:13 Dream. After years of honing these tracks onstage, Robert Smith and the band have finally committed them to vinyl for their 14th studio album. Named the Discogs community’s favorite album of 2024 despite being released in the eleventh hour, Songs of a Lost World isn’t a nostalgic rehash or a desperate bid from a band past its prime. This is the band at their most mature and somber — melodrama replaced by the weight of true grief.

Absolute Elsewhere
Blood Incantation
Blood Incantation are one of the rare modern bands that unite metalheads across the spectrum. Their riffs are filthy, their sound is gnarly, and they’re not afraid to crank up the cheese when it fits. Psychedelic, brutal, and unrelenting, Absolute Elsewhere fuses the ambient explorations of Timewave Zero with the guttural ferocity of 2019’s Hidden History of the Human Race. Spanning two side-length epics (“The Stargate” and “The Message”), the album cements the band’s place at the forefront of the cosmic death metal scene.

Self-Titled Reissue on 180-gram Vinyl
Black Sabbath
A great reissue has a purpose, and Rhino knows that. With their Hi-Fidelity series, the label has been meticulously reissuing classic albums, elevating their sound and presentation to new heights. This year, they turned their attention to Black Sabbath’s groundbreaking debut, giving it the ultimate treatment. Cut from the original stereo master tapes, this version brings fans as close to the studio experience as possible. Simply put, this is the definitive edition — a stunning labor of love crafted with the lifelong fan in mind.

Selected Ambient Works Volume II
Aphex Twin
When Aphex Twin’s 30th-anniversary box set for Selected Ambient Works Volume II dropped, it instantly became a frontrunner for Packaging of the Year. Warp Records went all out, creating something truly special for fans. The box is crafted from polished wood and topped with a copper plate bearing the iconic Aphex Twin logo. Over time, each copper plate will develop a unique patina, ensuring no two sets are alike. Inside, fans are treated to four LPs, stickers, and concept art. There are box sets — and then there are box sets. This is the latter.

Chromakopia Limited-Edition Test Pressing
Tyler, The Creator
Tyler, the Creator’s Chromakopia rollout was a flex in marketing. A series of teasers—tracks, tour dates, and a vinyl drop — built the hype. The crown jewel? A whole video dedicated to a limited-edition record, proving vinyl’s place in his world. It wasn’t just a cash grab. Tyler used the moment to tease three new tracks — “Like Him,” “Rah Tah Tah,” and “Take Your Mask Off” — pushing the hype even further. The result: the “Test-pressing” version of Chromakopia is now a $200 collector’s item. Playboi Carti’s vinyl exclusive verse on “Thought I Was Dead” didn’t hurt either.

Saltburn Soundtrack on Bath Water-Filled Clear Vinyl
Various
If you know, you know. No need to get into details — but if you’ve seen the hit film Saltburn, you’ll understand why this release was an obvious standout. Pressed by Bad World Records in partnership with Polydor Records, the vinyl mimics bathwater, complete with a drain design for the label and white liquid encased between Side A and Side B. It’s rare for a vinyl pressing to break into the mainstream conversation, but this one did. After a 32-hour preorder window, the record sparked equal parts iration, intrigue, and revulsion across social media.
