Absolutely incredible from start to finish, a minimalist textural masterpiece... an outlier in the world of DnB to say the least.
i bought a new copy at a record store in 2001, loved it then but didnt quite understand it. However my favorite track, and its very hard to pick a favorite... has to be "the saint". Nothing like it out there.
But "asylum" and the title track also top this cut list to me. Never gets old. Ever. -
Most under rated DnB album, of all time? I'd say so. Still holds up as something special 25 years later. Gold. Plenty of dance floor destroyers, and armchair head nodders to boot. A firm fave.

Edited one year agoSuch a shame Airhead being the only track left off from the vinyl edition… best track on the album really, and it's not even available on any 12″ either!

Great album, I just wish it had been released a year or two earlier. My favorite track is "The Saint" which is definitely not a dance floor track but still a great example of what drum and bass was capable of when taken deeper. "Gap the Mind" is also quite amazing, so is "Junction."

I must agree with the previous two comments on this album as it really is a great piece of music when listened to as a whole and as systray27 has pointed out, "Apache" is the high point for sure. Not sure whats happened to Matrix in regards to his musical output but you know, he wrote this album and he will go down as one of the scenes best producers imo.

In my Best of DnB bucket... Now you can ask.. WTF happened to Matrix considering the tripe he has written since 2004

Edited 19 years agoThis is the best work of dnb and jazz-fusion ever to be heard! Matrix' best musical piece, and in my opinion on of the highpoints in drum & bass. Neurofunk basslines and reeses, layered with breaks and sometimes some jazzy samples. He once mentioned, that a lot of his inspiration comes from miles davis, which you can clearly hear on this record.
I guess Apache is the best track on here - named after the break, this is a great influential piece with masterful break editing. Bongos at it's best!
If you're into the virus sound, then this album is a must have!
