Bacteria is undoubtedly an absolute classic and another jewel in the crown of Ed Rush & Optical's legacy.
As someone on one of the You Tube vids mentions, that 909 rimshot in the intro that replaces what would normally be a cymbal or hi-hat really defies what the listener would usually expect in the intro to a DnB track.
I also think that this is a kind of a blueprint for the sounds that we would later associate with other producers from that period like Stakka and Skynet and Konflict. Especially when they collaborated on the track Biosfear which has a similar sounding whooshing synth line.
Great fun mixing them together. -
The bassline from Bacteria is a twisted up sample from 1992 track Disintegrator - Disintegrated on Industrial Strength Records.

I absolutely love this 12", "Bacteria" and "Gas Mask" are so distinct sounding and epitomize the Virus sound in the late '90s. These tracks had a real identity and character when they first came out, I still can't believe that they were made. Weird, funky, and technically amazing, this music is due for a resurgence.

Perfection. The bassline in gasmask just never gets old. The whole track is just masterfully creepy and gathers attention like nothing else. Its very well thought through musically, and the sounds are punchy, thick and yet soft and pleasing to the ear..

Still think Bacteria sound more like a gas mask, and Gas Mask sounds more like bacteria multiplying. Unique sounds from producers who have not yet managed to live up to their legacy. I await the day they break their original hardware out again and start making more techstep!

Edited 9 years agoi bought the vinyl back in the release days 2 times. one for spinning in the club and the other for "NEVER" touching. both tracks are the best "MASTER PIECES" in history by Ed Rush & optical. The only confusing is: wrong labels on both sides. i thought a long time, Gasmask is Bakteria and backwards :D

This release was so unique for its time. I reckon the vinyls are getting tricky to find these days, especially with the plates the right way round!
