Edited 5 months agoAgree with other reviews. This is a noisy pressing. First track has the 3-4 seconds snap-crackle sound every rotation until the loudness of the music takes over to mask it. Presses at RI, that explains it!! Aren't they the one's that botched the vinyl pressing of Pink Floyd's Animals 2018 Remix that had the exact same issue? Need I take the review any further? Guess I will stick with the US OG pressing. Sorry for the bad news, but I wouldn't seek this out unless you want to go thru auditing multiple copies. However, you may have better luck getting a Willy Wonka golden ticket.

A great record! The sound is good, has much bass, low noice floor, and great upper end. Enjoy the record

Edited 11 months agoSo it is a digital recording, presumably on DAT, and quiet original pressings are hard to find. I went through 4 or 5 UK first labels and they all had terrible non-fill: noise throughout both sides on all of them. I read someone else here claim he had been through 15 UK first presses and all had non-fill. So the original press was noisy. I usually avoid reissues because they sound like ghosts of the originals, but I decided to give this one a shot as the original was digital and was a troublesome pressing. Well, this half-speed remastered reissue is a quiet enough pressing, but the sound is not an improvement on the original mastering. The og had decent sharpness and definition, whilst this one is a bit lacking in that department. This reissue does have fatter bass, but I wonder if it is due to compression? Ho hum. I might have to search for a Japanese first label.

I have seen several reviews that say this is not a very good disc, that it is noisy or over compressed, but I have to say that this has not been my experience.
The half speed master is, while not the best I have heard, still quite good and the noise is minimal.
My only issue, and it was the same on my OG from back in ‘the day’ when I first had this in ‘82, is that the disc is a little crammed tight, so it is a little quiet. This could have been better spread across 4 sides. I understand there are version in 33 and 45rpm over two discs, but I have not found a decent copy for a decent price yet. -
Edited 2 years agoOverall I have to say I hate this version of this record. They turned it all up to loud and the pressing is crap as well, littered with noise. I love this album and the sound of this really puts a bad flavor in my mouth for it. I've always thought of it as a warm and soft sound and this is anything but that. Loud obnoxious and shouty sounding to my ear. I'll try the hi Rez but my guess is the best sound is going to be from the original mastering. They weren't competing for the loudest signal back then, this new way of just cranking the volume with a remaster kills all the subtleties. If it's not loud enough just turn your system up louder you will be treated to nicer dynamic contrasts as opposed to nearly overdriven signal that keeps all the sounds up near the top.

I got this one and the repress of the 3rd as Deutsches Album. While the sound is outstanding, the pressing quality is mediocre. Loud surface noise on both pressings, worse on side 1 than on 2 for both records. Its okay to listen to, but I should have bought old japanese pressings from the 80s. Got the 3rd album (english) as japanese pressing, excellent all around!
