Anyone knows the origin for this Elemental Music edition, is it digital or analogue (original tapes)?

Edited one year agoA real holiday for all jazz lovers. Finally, an official and serious release of this brilliant album from the workshop of the master tenor. Reworked versions under the supervision of its author appear fresh and at the same time artistically valuable. Shepp invited, or received first-class cats in this field. Shepp himself and trombonist Rudd have a very good Coltrane to listen to, what can be felt from the album. It's striking how confident the album feels as a whole, especially considering it's Shepp's debut. Perfect rhythm runs like the best clock engine. The album even comes close to the original versions with a subtle spirituality, perhaps a little at the expense of the melody. From several listening sessions, it gradually becomes, I apologize - the original. Behind the fantastic result is Van Gelder's excellent sound, which I appreciated from several previous media. This stereo version is stretched a bit more in space. But compact and without the "chaos of L+R". The MPO pressing is cut a little louder, but without distortion. The instruments sound clean, textured and probably warm for a digital origin. The color of the packaging is similar to the others from this series, creamy, but with nice contours. The paper is thin, but it smells nice even with the vinyl...

How anyone can give less than five stars for this pressing is beyond me. It’s so dynamic and quiet, the instruments really do sound so real. I usually go for the US Impulse original pressings but this one is really just as good, if not a little better. There’s not a bad track on this beautiful album either. Archie Shepp and co playing the most wonderful Coltrane numbers plus one of Shepp’s for good measure. A stunning pressing, highly recommended! -

Recently played this for the first time in a few years, and was blown away. One of the best appearances by Alan Shorter, BTW.

I have a white label pressing of this. It comes in a gatefold sleeve but not flipback. The run out matrix is IMPL 8049 and the sleeve is printed in England by Robert Stace. No dates on the release and it feels and looks like an early 70s pressing but nothing on line to confirm this. Does anyone have any ideas?

As far as jazz tribute albums go this one has been a classic since its birth and rightfully soul. Archie Shepp doesn't just mimic Coltranes sound or design but rather adds a blues tilt to them along with some slight improvisation as well. I can just imagine that Archie put his full effort into each and every note as he must have been aware that this release is going to have all ears focused on it since the title refers to the legend himself. Well, he very much did pull it off and the way the group plays together you would have thought they spent years working together on these tracks, which they didn't. Each track is pulled tight and Archie is in control throughout the whole album exploding with rhythm and beauty while the rest of the band sets the pace. There's a jazz author that refers Archie as Coltranes evil twin, and in this release you hear it very much. The last track, Shepp's only composition on the album, is probably my favorite on here. Fast paced tempo and a great free style. Such a great listen and a great tribute overall.
