Initially recorded by Zappa for Capitol in 1967, as a solo composer & conductor outside of 'The Mothers'. The project made it to disc as MGM vetoed the work, resulting in FZ reworking the release for Verve - the label to whom, it was claimed, he was contracted. Some rare Capitol issues on 4-track tape exist. The reworking was released on Verve in 1968. FZ remastered the work in 1985 & 1993.
Zappa comments on the sleeve notes: "Is this Phase 2 of We're Only In It For The Money?" - which echoes his vision on that work, where he comments; "Is this Phase I of 'Lumpy Gravy'?". This "Lumpy Gravy" work contains conversations 'within a piano'.
Themes (& material) in this work can then be picked up in the work Zappa completed before his death: Civilization Phaze III

Edited 5 months agoI've got most of these early Zappa/Mothers on original pressings, and yeah these are definitely awesome. Going out of the way to master them well and I think the vinyl is quite a bit better than mid-60s Verve. Now if Zappa records had sent this out in a better mailer this copy wouldn't have a huge seam split right across the top... -
Sound quality is really nice on this pressing, aside from the previously mentioned line that is muffled a bit. The sleeve and record are a little lightweight but the print quality is nice and at least my disc isnt floppy. -
Edited 10 months agoI can also say that the vinyl is thin, but the sound of the record is excellent. The one audio part ("I'm paranoid... I'm very paranoid") is a bit muffled (compared to the later digital remaster, where you can understand everything), but the rest is superb. The gatefold is thick and high quality.
I'm very happy to have this copy in my collection. -

I’m not sure if it’s my own individual copies or in general, but this mono version is much clearer than the UK stereo (SVLP) mix. -

Como soporte de audio, mi vinilo, 1972 UK, tiene un audio muy superior a esta edición 2016. Solo la recomendaría si eres como yo, que deseo tener todas las reediciones de aquella época.

Extraordinary experience. Grundman did a fine job mastering this one. Great clarity throughout both sides of this strange but intriguing album. Album cover is wonderful as well. -

I think Lumpy Gravy is an early highlight of the mad genius that is Frank Zappa - a man that has his finger in every musical pie and handles each with deftness. That being said, LG is a bit of a cut & paste mess, and for that it will never be one of my favourites. But it's perfectly avantgarde for the time, with hardly a drop of pretense. But the somewhat non-sequitur visits to inside the piano with "Louie The Turkey" and friends just doesn't stand up to repeated listens. However, I still find myself listening to Lumpy Gravy about once a year, if only to hear what it sounds like when a com spins in every direction.
