Edited one year ago“It was so difficult,” Zappa recalled, “That one part in the middle of the song ‘Montana’, that the three girls rehearsed it for a couple of days. Just that one section. You know the part that goes ‘I’m pluckin’ the ol’ dennil floss’? Right in the middle there. And – I can’t her name, but one of the harmony singers – she got it first. She came out and sang her part and the other girls had to follow her track.” Having toiled for hours to get the song right, naturally, they were pleased with themselves.
“Tina (Turner) was so pleased that she was able to sing this thing that she went into the next studio where Ike was working and dragged him into the studio to hear the result of her labour,” continued Zappa. “He listened to the tape and he goes, ‘What is this shit?’ and walked out.” It’s a serious indication of just how imposing and oppressive Ike Turner truly was and a reminder of how far Tina may have gone without him dragging her down." -
The last track on the album - Montana - features backing vocals by Tina Turner and the Ikettes throughout the entire track, notably on the middle and ending sections.

Ralph Humphrey on drums, to me, is the "true" hero of this fantastic album; usually acclaimed to be more "accessible" Zappa for somewhat more short-timed tracks or for the "catchy" lyrics of "Dinah-Moe Humm". Indeed, it's nothing less than a masterpiece of stunning compositions with complex rhythms, odd meters brilliantly performed (by the whole band) recorded and adapted to the sound of it. Apart from other Re-Releases of the early Zappa-CD-Era (esp. UMRK-Remixes), all existing recordings/masters of this album are also pretty good in their digital equivalent.

In the Barry Miles biography, FZ claims the backup vocalists on "Montana" were the Ikettes, including Tina Turner herself! Any independent verification of this?

Great sounds on this lp and the pressing is exceptional! The lyrics and artwork are great as well, goes without saying that this and Apostrophe serve very well as a side by side listen.
