Supertramp – Breakfast In America

I think the mixed reviews come down to different expectations people have.
Many old time fans go in with the loud and forward sounding original as a reference point and feel disappointed when this press doesnt give the same immediacy.
But it seems pretty clear to me that MFSL or Krieg, as he has done in the past, is trying to create a depth to the soundstage which is very different but effective none the less. I urge people with more bias towards how this record "should" sound to turn the lights off, sit centered and comfortably and try to listen again as if its more of a live performance.

This Blu-ray disc contains the over-compressed Sterling remasters. Brickwalled sound and a waste of time. The 2018 SACD/CD from MoFi is by far the best this album has ever sounded.

Nice pressing and mastering . A little bright but not sibilance mode . Translucent black vinyl with almost no surface sound .

I have been saying for a while now that I want to get the original masters of albums that were eventually put out onto CD, with the whole notion of "if it was good enough to get shipped on the vinyl and listened to by millions, it'll be good enough to listen to." This has stopped me dead in my tracks. And it's not because the songs are mixed poorly or anything, but when I think of Supertramp, I think of an absolute powerhouse of a band, roaring and powerful and full. By contrast, this is.. it's like I'm listening to a different album, like different takes or something altogether. It's so much more trebly and light and almost thin-sounding, but you can hear much more instrumentation and intricacy throughout. It was a delight to listen to throughout, but so so different, and.. I think I must it I like the remaster much more. Round it out and don't be afraid to punch the lower bits a bit more!

Also kinda funny, but in my booklet, the "1." is missing next to the first song's title. A misprint maybe, but not about to create a whole 'nother version for it.

Bought new in '79. Played it often in those years. On more capable gear today it sounds better than ever, but of course this band was known for releasing great-sounding records.

This one sounds absolutely terrific. Killer pressing!

No problems here. Mine sounds great. Bought it used, but the seller did say he wet cleaned it. Maybe that’s all the difference, but mine is quiet and I couldn’t be happier with it.

The sublimity of this album is not in question. I have a great pressing of it (the Netherlands 1979). Supposedly the Mofi version is even better. Highly recommend checking out this superbly produced gem if you haven't already.
