Just to share something that really drives home the shortcomings the music, and the movie, that make it so special. It is no accident the score is so minimal, and not purely for style reasons...

When 'Halloween' had gone on the chopping board & was past the post production stage, it was test- screened.

The was not great, in fact mostly negative...

Imagine 'Halloween' without the soundtrack you likely know even better than the film. Imagine it with no music at all, other than a few 'jump' stabs & atmospherics. That is exactly what the first cut was; and it bombed.

JC had relatively minutes to try to re-format the film & gain the trust back from the moguls. Not an easy task.

He made a decision which was smart (from a time perspective) and one which went on to change the face of the horror genre, and movie soundtracks in general; he recorded a score. Simple (minimal) due to time and budget, and with limited tools, the 'Halloween' soundtrack was born.

It was by nature as stark and unforgiving as the movie itself.

Clearly the was stronger, as the film was finally released in 1979, & went on to become one of the best known & most influential 'slasher' movies of all time. That said, it must have been a tough gig releasing an independent movie which at the time was utterly unique in its approach. A true maverick concept rarely gets ed 1st time around.

Just a masterpiece. I dare you to play this loud on an audiophile level system. It will haunt you. Easily the most unnerving album I own. The synths and keys are exceptional as is the recording and production.

ittedly a pretty random comment, but it always bothered me a little that "Laurie's Theme" is just the main 'Halloween' theme except slower. I mean at least add a couple notes or something!

Can anyone tell me whether this is supposed to have a proper inner sleeve? The copy I have just has a plastic anti-static sleeve. Many thanks.
