The Run's House beat still sounds crisp. The Funky Drummer mixed with the TR-808 bass kick and snare was very innovative for the time. It made me question if it was purely sampled or programmed from scratch on a drum machine. For a long time I was convinced it was purely analogue / drum machine emulating the Funky Drummer rather than a bit of both.

But! I've always and will always prefer Beats To The Rhyme as a tune on its own. One of my favourite Run DMC tunes, at least of their late '80s releases, one of my favourite Hip Hop records. I was generally more into their early '80s material minus the rock elements. Better rap and flow for me. I love the breakbeat and samples on this. One of the most versatile beats. Get two copies of the instrumental mix and prolong the pleasure, pitch it and mash it up with House Acid House Techno music and create Breakbeat Hardcore Techno in the process, speed it up even further and you're effectively spinning Jungle Techno. Some DJs did and it sounded sweet. Rivals the The Winstons Amen Brother any day of the week, or is there actually a hint of the Amen crash cymbal underneath anyway? Bah, too many rabbit holes.

Beats To The Rhyme / Instrumental should've been at least five minutes long. What's with the under 3 minutes running time. Tune and a half.

Beats To The Rhyme here is a different mix than the album version. On this 12" single the word "dick" is clearly audible in the Sam Kinison sample "DICK IN YOUR MOUTH ALL DAY." On the album, the word "dick" is obscured by a "uhhhmm" sound.
