Hozier is the stage name of Irish singer-songwriter Andrew Hozier-Byrne, who broke through in 2013 with the single Take Me To Church. Touches of it with religious references number was an indictment of the vision of the Catholic Church on homosexuality, and the associated disturbing video was viewed millions of times. What (video) stood out to Take Me To Church was Hoziers lived vocals, with influences from soul, blues and gospel. These influences are also strongly present on his self-titled debut album. Hozier, however, not quite out of nowhere. He stopped all in his first year with his study musicology at Trinity College, Dublin to concentrate on a singing career, and from 2009 to 2012, he was a member of the Irish-Celtic choir anniversary congratulations event in Copenhagen. The Celtic influences have on Hoziers debut given way to dark folk and blues, whereby above all the slower songs a pensive nature. Hozier tends sometimes to bombast, but can also subdued sound. The result is a touching album.
