When the Mac made this album they had to follow up the successful self-titled album, which was a great album in itself. And somehow despite their personal lives being a mess, they sured it.
While people assign the 'all killer, no filler' tag to many hit albums, I feel this deserves it more than any. When I first heard songs like 'The Chain' and 'Songbird', I could not believe that they weren't hit singles originally. Then I heard the rest of the album and realised why. On some of the band's later output the three different songwriters sometimes led to albums sounding a tad disted, however here it works perfectly as there is a common theme throughout, that of relationships. The ordering of tracks is also perfect, as because it alternates between the vocalists it seems like they are responding to the previous song.
The production is fantastic across every song, which makes it no surprise that co-producers Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut would work with the band for many years after. The recordings still sound clear and dynamic today, making it a great album to play on vinyl.
My personal favourite songs are 'Go Your Own Way', 'Dreams' and 'The Chain' but it really is impossible to say the 'best' songs. Just listen to the whole record!
