Notes
Label variant: (Atco) purple/brown Stereo labels that were only produced on Atlantic releases when pressed at RCA Records Pressing plant, Indianapolis. Some say these issues are "club" issues but no proof on release. Others feel that these were created from stock Atco labels to fill the need. "Club" or press error, a very rare label.
From bsnpubs: This label is rare and only appeared on a few titles from around 8130 to 8200. The Led Zeppelin album error commands prices, since not only is the label in error, but side 1 of the album is a different mix from the regular pressing.
Also side 2 does sound a little different from the standard issue. There is a long pause between "Black Mountain Side" and "Communication Breakdown", where the standard issue had no silence at all. And there is an unusually long silence between "Communication Breakdown" and "I Can't Quit You Baby", much longer than was on the standard issue.
The running time for B5, "How Many More Times" is listed on the back cover as 3:30, but actually plays 8:30.
For Variant 3, track B5, the song "How Many More Times" is banded in the vinyl to be two (2) tracks instead of one. Visually Side B appears to have 6 tracks but plays the standard 5. The second band of B5 is positioned at the beginning of the 'atmospheric' break in the song, at ~3:35.

In my experience of selling records for decades, this is a rare item. I've seen three in 35 years. Make sure you confirm you are getting the version you want when purchasing, as I would assume they are not unless specified.

I found one of these recently about VG, and it sounds pretty good. I compared it to my NM 1977 (not GP) and this plumb label sounds better. I have a few others to check it against. I like it.

This is ridiculous with people spinning lies to make money. The original version mastered by RG is better than any other US copy, it's not close either. I've owned all of them including this RCA piece of junk.

Edited 2 years agoLet's get this straight. This is an early unmarked RCA Record Club pressing. No doubt. Is the mix different? No. But the mastering and EQ is slightly different. Does it sound better than the regular Rob Grenell mastered first pressing? Yes, Grenell was a hack. Does it sound as good as a later Piros mastering? No. Is it rare as a collector's item. Yes. End of story.

This and all labels of this type are known by experts to be RCA Record Club pressings. Pure fraud, one of the oldest scams on discogs and that says a lot. There is only one good US copy of this record and that is the original RG cuts.

Whether anyone knows what the story is behind this label variation, it's pretty hard to find; especially in good condition. My copy sounds fantastic imo.

This is the Captiol Record Club pressing. The proof is the ST-A prefix in the run-out. The Atco colors label was used to prevent returns to Atlantic instead of the record club since the cover has no differences from Atlantic pressings.

Edited 4 years agoI would also like to add that these copies can have a Gold Record Award Sticker on them.
EDIT: also, I see the review giving this pressing 1 star, this album although with it's controversies, is an excellent pressing, which continues to sound good through many plays -
There is no different mix on this. NONE! It sounds nice, and mine has marks that it plays right through.
Some of these label pressing aren't that great sounding, but this one is good. -
