I like this pressing MORE that Blue Note Classic Series and this is why:
- first and foremost: MIXING.
IMO, it's recorded quite balanced and the instruments sound like a real band: even on this record this "holographic effect" can be observed as if you're listening to the real quintet.
- Frequency range: what I hear is BASS lacking, but overall it's easily cured, no big deal
- Dynamic range: it's quite above average ad may be one of the best in this price range, punchy, distinctive, yet not as precise and realistic as I wish it to be.
- PRICE is TWICE less that Blue Note, and a few years ago when it was one of the buying factors, it's something to consider.
Downsides: from what I see here it's quite a gambling regarding the random deffects and it seems I've won this lottery )
As usual, signal/noise ratio can be bigger than of releases from another league, and "realism" of the instruments could be better.
VERDICT: after I bought Blue Note, I understood that you can always add more bass or highs (sorry my dear puritan audiophiles) and enjoy your favorite music, instead of listening to much more realistic, yet artificially put together "samples" that kills all the joy.

My copy is awful. Brand new, and has a click on the first 20 rotations or so, right on the title track. Basically unlistenable for that reason. Poor QC.

Sounds way better than DOL and other digital remasters. Fair priced and enjoyable (and one of my favorite jazz records)

Edited 3 years agoHighly disappointed with this release. It has a noise between tracks and in the quiet ages similar to electrical humming. like an electrical interference at the background, When you get the full agges, you won't notice it at all, but in the quiet ones and in between tracks, it is just annoying.
I had good experience in the past with WAXTIME label but this one is disappointing.

Less than satisfying pressing. Perhaps this sounds satisfying on a Crosley with a blunt, conical stylus, but the shibata stylus on my AT440mla detects non-fill noise in many places. I guess you get what you pay for, but in my mind, even the $17 I paid for this is too much.

This is an OK pressing. I found new it in a local shop for about $15. I don't regret picking it up since it's a difficult album to find on vinyl, but I'm glad I didn't pay much more for it. The pressing is clean and flat, and the jacket looks great but the sound is underwhelming. I don't have another version on vinyl to compare it to, but I do have Miles Davis' The Original Quintet (First Recording) which is also a DMM from WaxTime and it sounds much more dynamic IMHO. I don't regret picking this up, but I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a better copy.

as this album is damn near impossible to find at as decent price/per pressing, i decided to take a chance on this DMM version and it's not a bn80 or tone poet but it is actually quite good.
