One of my favorite Deepchord Albums, very magical, deep and hypnotic. Feels like exploring magical places during the night. My top track in this release is "Spring Mist" .

Deepchord’s SOMMER starts, fittingly enough, with “Glow,” a piece of ambience that soon finds its voice and its beat, whispering into the warmth of “Aquatic.” The fundamental mystery of “Cruising Towards Dawn” lies in its simplicity: two ringing notes, skimming across the murky beat and chugging rhythm; compare that to the complex background of “The Universe as a Hologram,” or the combination of the two in the cool groove of “Beneteau.” The dub throbs on “Fourier,” which carries a deep, resonant drum, whereas “Aeronautics” keeps the rhythm at more of a distance. The urgency of “Flow Induced Vibrations” gives the album a propulsive boost and “Spring Mist” keeps it going, albeit accompanied by electronic flutterings. “Amber” introduces hints of African percussion, though these soon disappear beneath the larger beat, and “Alfama” peppers itself with hissing hi-hats, while “Gliding” doesn’t glide as much as it bristles with energy. “Wind Farm” closes the album on ambience again, a sustained bliss that finds purchase in stillness. Perfect summer listening for the Arctic Circle.

Edited 7 years agoListened to this album for the first time last night driving home from a successful first date. The air temperature at the time was 72 degrees and the sun had almost completely gone down. What a trip this is. The tracks on this CD have sounds and elements that are unlike anything I've heard from Rod before. Bright chirps, squeals, percussion hits. This music is what life is all about. Some of the tracks in the middle/end of the CD are monsters. "Spring Mist" especially....so big.

This is an incredible album, a masterpiece and a typically strong and completely resolved statement of Rod Modell's aesthetic. If there is one person who can demonstrate that there is no repetitiveness in repetition it is Rod Modell.

Edited 12 years agoThis album fascinates with its soaring sonic elation and esoteric libations.
The energy one experiences while traveling to new places during the summer phases through each song.
Melody is ever present on this album and track by track, generous amounts of positive energy can be felt.
Rod Modell expresses his sonic vision in a masterful way. His albums demonstrate dedication, talent and understanding of his musical craft.
There have been many DeepChord releases over the years, but I feel this LP is the most psychedelic, beautiful and it strikes a Deepchord. -
Edited 12 years agoLet me start by saying this album is something seldom felt, a sediment and term I wouldn't use lightly in this particular genre. If you're expecting Modell to deviate to far from his sound you're right, the sound which was once DeepChord has moved far out of focus. Albums like, "Incense & Blacklight" & 'The DeepChord Years" are no where to be heard here, some may think it's progression but I prefer to say it's regression. I think he's had enough of the stagnant formula this type of music has become. There's nothing forced here, it's as imaginative and original as where his sound originally stems from in his first ambient experiments. If you're a fan of his early work from the 90's you'll understand my state of thought on this subject. This is music for thought, deep concentration if "Hash-Bar-Loops" was concentrated on the "Loop-Minded" then the focus here is on the "Open-Minded". I can imagine a Yoga instructor introducing this to his students in mantra, it's musically induced meditation.
The music of a mantra easily rescues the mind and brings it back to the object of one’s meditation. Both the rhythm of it and the meaning of it combine to guide the mind safely back to the point of meditation — the higher consciousness or the specific spiritual focus. This album delivers something for the mind, body and spirit. -
Again some great trippy ambient pieces with different layers of muffled sounds playing with your consciousness. This productions sounds more full with different layers of sounds. Like to hear this music on a great warm summer night when the sunset has just gone down. You just want to sit back and go with the flow of the music. It is nice he used different field recordings on different places in the world! Very nice release imo I prefer this one more dan Hash Bar Loops.
