If Deepcord releases 13 versions of a track, remixed mostly by his hand with an assist from cv313, does it make an album? Maybe not, but the “Vantage Isle Sessions” still remains eminently listenable, as the groove establishes itself immediately in the “DC Mix I” (the “DC Mix II” is much more subdued). The rhythms disappear, though, swallowed by the granular sweeps of the “Echospace Glacial” or by the tones echoing out and circling back in on themselves on the “Spaceecho Dub.” If you crave the beats, however, you can find them as deep throbs on the “Echospace Reshape” or steadying the layers that filter in and out on “Spacecho Dub II.” Convexion, the only outside remixer, brings in much more of a Detroit element, with space synths to round out the dub. But the “Echospace Reform” keeps the deep beat and even puts a house-y click in to perks things up, but the “Echospace Spatial Dub” opens up enough to swallow all of it in its maw. The “Cv313 Reduction” keeps the spaciousness but speeds the tempo up some, and the “Echospace Excursion” maintains the speed but injects it with a hint of cosmic funk. But as the “Cv313 Reduction II” closes the album, calling back to the earlier ambient moments, it becomes clear that Deepchord is adept enough to make all these remixes distinct, such that you can revisit this isle again and again.

This is one of my favourite purchases, its an absolute journey through the abyss of sheer deepness, its almost freighting, its hard to believe there all the same track remixed as each has its own distinct sound. The tracks can be listened to individually, but as always for the deepchord experience listening in tracklist order is essential. This is a definite must have for any Dub Techno, ambient fan. 5/5

Edited 15 years agoI haven't been a fan of Rod Modell for an extremely long time, but ever since I became one I took upon myself to collect every CD he released, no matter what alias he was using. One such CD that turned out to be rather impossible to get ahold of was Vantage Isle. A collection of versions of the title track performed by Deepchord, Echospace, cv313 and Convextion. All of which Modell is a member of save for the last. Anyways, to make a long story short, I was overly please when this album was decided to get re-issued in a wider number (the original version, was limited to 100 copies and released in 2007). I can honestly say the wait was worth it though. If you're a fan of such releases as 01-06, Vibrasound, The Coldest Season and Incense & Blacklight... Your collection won't be complete without this compilation. Even though this is essentially the same track remixed/reworked 13 times, you'd be hard pressed to notice it without seeing the track listing first. Very good variety, and deep as always.
