Another Compton classic. If only Eiht wouldn't have blown up off "Straight Up Menace", I would have investigated CMW's deep discography much sooner.
The intro with the inserts obviously inspired Nas' "I Am" showing how much reach CMW had after The Blue Tape.
Topics on this are similar to The Blue Tape - growing up in L.A., police brutality, and getting at females - but it has a little less bite than "The Blue Tape", because there isn't as much mobbing tracks. Though they're still there, CMW instead spend more time on "Straight Check'n 'Em" shouting themselves out and giving themselves the proper respect since at this time they were eclipsed by NWA, though Ice Cube and Da Lench Mob get referenced multiple times - from the ending credits to Eiht spitting something of a Lench Mob anthem with "Compton's Straight Lynching" and interpolating "Today Was A Good Day" in "Can I Kill It?".
It's great to see some Compton camaraderie in a sector of Hip-Hop that typically sees common in-fighting.
"Mikey T's Funky Scratch" and the outro date the record in the best ways. The shout-outs at the end are said like credits at the end of a film while the "Funky Scratch" record give homage to the DJ (in this case Mikey T), because without the beats this Compton Classic just couldn't exist.
