Notes
2023 UHQR Release
"Mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from a second-generation tape copy created by Rudy Van Gelder. The site also says why they went with the second gen tape over the master. The original master tape is available but it's not in the best shape. This LP was cut from a flat tape copy made by Rudy Van Gelder and used for cutting in the UK in April of 1965. Of course, the original recording was in December '64, so only a handful of months later. This tape was discovered at Abbey Road and had been untouched between 1965 and 2002. So while the original tape is available and while we would always opt for the original whenever we can, in this case this copy was the better choice as the tape has incurred less overall wear and sounds much better than the original."
Limited to 10,000 copies

Edited one month agoAs The_Vinyl_Dealer I have an old Japanese pressing to compare to too. This UHQR might sound slightly more dynamic (barely noticeble) but also a little brighter, whereas the sax is more prominent on the Japanese pressing. I prefer the Japanese pressing... These UHQRs (the only other one I have is "Kind of Blue") probably all deserve 5 stars yet somehow don't quite meet my (huge) expectations, somehow let me down... seeing all those raving reviews. I feel like they are massively overpriced (however I will upgrade my cartridge this summer, maybe this will make a difference).

I didn't think I needed this having an old Japanese pressing and the last RKS Acoustic Sounds pressing...but this is kind of a different beast. First of all the drums and bass are WAY more up front than other cuts. But the overall vibe is not that it is a great sounding record like the others...but John and Crew decided to plop down in my listening room and jam. It's spooky good.

Sound is wow, like really wow “what are those new instruments I am hearing” type of wow. BUT, the outer case is huge. It is not neccessary to have such a huge box.

Edited 11 months agoI have had this UHQR copy for a while now, and while it is expensive, it is a few steps up from the AP33 version from a couple of years ago, and well worth it to me. I played this copy to a group of friends who are normally talkative and half distracted, this had everyone's attention as they fell silent throughout the playback, even those who said they would never spend that kind of money on a single release were going to the AP site to put it in their cart - exceptional!

Edited 4 months agoA Love Supreme has been a long time coming for me. It is only now with the help of this version that I really get into ALS. The music and sound are intense and present, something that transcends time and space, it is a spiritual experience to listen to this. I feel something. Thank you.

Anyone who is interested in this record should watch George Borden’s review of this UHQR release on YT. It’s his favorite record and this video has made him relatively well-known in the online VC; at least it did for me. It’s pretty damn moving.

Edited one year agoI have the AP33 and UHQR versions. I feel the difference, AP33 sounds a little bit harsher when comparing to the UHQR.
Bass and drums sound much better, more present and detailed.
Maybe my ear is not as refined as other reviewers, IMHO it was worth the exorbitant price.
I have to say though, my other UHQR, Kind of Blue is at another league, way superior.
Looking forward to other UHQR releases. I wanted Getz/Gilberto in UHQR, gladly, Impex is doing it! -
Edited one year agoStunning! The Holy Grail of ALS. You have not heard A Love Supreme until you have experienced this UHQR pressing. It feels like Coltrane and his band are in my living room. This definitive and essential pressing is definitely the best sounding vinyl in my collection.

Well worth the rather exorbitant cost. Truly THE definitive edition of one of the most seminal masterpieces in music history. 5 of 5 stars.
