Underwater hiphop extravaganza!! The pressing is fine, the sound is clearer than before, more pophop a la JBs, the colour does not disturb. One of my key-albums of early hiphop: extremely groovin', with dub+jazz elements, cool samples (hendrix!), funny speech as far as I understand.

Edited 2 years agoSounds decent to me, a bit of surface noise. Likely not from an analog source but starting around this time in rap 2" tape would start to be phased out. Sounds good for however it was sourced. Happy that they included the printed inner sleeves. A seriously underrated album in my opinion. Now I hope that a reissue of Sons of the P, which is also stellar.

Glad to finally have Gutfest on vinyl. Discs look great, sound is good, but IMO this is the best produced hip hop album of all time so it better sound good.
I dislike two records in a single sleeve as I like to keep my records inside the GF or behind the cover.
Surprised they were able to press and release 2 flat records so quickly after Shock's death given the pressing backups.
Glad to have a good version of this one finally. -
Hi there, I am glad that I have gotten this reissue. Excellent bass and it's exactly the same as the cd I owned.

However, I felt sad that this is just another cd dump to vinyl just to make money out of us. Yes, other had already mentioned on the lousy artwork both on the cover and the inserts. It really looked like a blow up from the cd to fit a 12" cover.
Why I said it was a cd dump? Well, anyone who had the original US CD will know that towards the end of doowutchyalike, the phrase "baby dope is in the house", dope is messed up just like the cd.
Below is the snippet I took recorded. There were other faults on the original cd that is present here as well, but this is the most obvious.

Lastly, I guess it will be the last Tommy boy reissue that I will ever get. -
I used to pray for this version. The blue wax and all. I'm only mad at the track order and the fact they still didn't add Hip Hop Doll, Sound Of The Underground (Money B's Solo) or the full gutfest skit. If we ever get another version of this I wish they'd add a 7 inch with those 3 ts.

Anyone know how many they're limited to? I got my store's last copy but he was able to grab quite a few, so I'm assuming in the mid thousands?? But have never heard a number on it. Anyone got that info? Sounds great btw - if anyone wondering, it's not quite as analog mastered sounding as the original, but it's very spacious and really fills the room. I've had many hip hop reissues that don't sound very dense. Like a flat wall of sound and only sounding good if played very loud. This sounds great at any volume.

I'm sorry to say this was clearly a money grab after the ing of Shock-G. Comparing this reissue to my 1990 pressing, here's what I noticed: The reissue cover art looks awful, like it was filtered through Instagram. The track listing is identical to the CD, but not the original LP or the cassette. The sound is not any better, in fact not as good as the original LP, which coupled with the art leads me to believe it was taken from a digital master, and not the analog one. I also see no reason for this to be spread across two LPs, since the original was only a single disc. The cassette version had three extra tracks, as well as a longer version of Gutfest '89, which would have been a great reason to add the second disc. If you don't have the original version, this album is still a must have. But if you can grab a 1990 pressing, you'd be better off.
