Very good pressing with great clarity. Vinyl is silent. It sounds slightly restrained but it's worth every penny.

Great compilation of songs I've heard for many years, but never on vinyl until now. It does not sound as excellent as the Unknown Pleasures reissue, but it is definitely very good! Although not a go-to JD album for me, it does have some of my non-album favorites. Packaging is decent, could be sturdier. My copy was bit more crackly than other new purchases, but music drowns it out. It's worth having, but not worth paying too much for.
PS: Ordered 3 albums from Rhino...
recommend ordering here instead...

Edited 2 years agoPurchased this when it came out. Listening right now and wow. What a fantastic sounding album. Unlike other remasters of these songs..this version really gets it right. Highs ..vocals..bass guitar...instrument separation all good and crystal clear. Sounds more like my 80s pressings than the recent remasters. An essential purchase for Joy Division fans. Just ..some of the songs are different versions than on the original release..so you will still need to keep that version. Oh and btw my pressing is flat and dead quiet. Beautiful press.

Edited 2 years agoThe mix is a wonderful, contemporary take on the Joy Division oeuvre. This Abbey Road treatment takes a bunch of tracks recorded in different periods and brings a consistency to the whole affair. What it lacks, is the intimacy found in the original pressings.
I own an 'Unknown Pleasures' from June of 1979: https://www.discogs.sie.com/release/11400-Joy-Division-Unknown-Pleasures
I've compared 'She's Lost Control' from that pressing, and the version on this release of 'Substance.' The newer take is much louder and likely geared towards 21 century listening tastes. As a result, the percussion tends to crowd into Ian's vocals. What's lost is the supernatural queasiness gained from the original. I miss how the reverb in his voice would be given the room to spiral out into the space between instruments.
Even still, the Substance treatment still provides a fine urgency to a broad group of songs and is perfect for an overview in one sitting. If you have a preference for a more New Order-era direction, I'd definitely recommend 'Substance.' If you crave a more subdued and solemn approach, with better respect given to the quiet moments, do yourself a favor and save up for the original pressings. -
Edited 4 years agoThese reviews are spot on. I'm listening to "No Love Lost" right now and am blown away by the clarity of the separation in each channel. There's an immediacy that few LPs approach (for reference, the 2014 US Experience Hendrix pressing of Are You Experienced is in the same league).

This pressing sounds fantastic. Great stereo imaging, punchy, solid full frequency spectrum, almost zero surface noise. Great pressing for sure.

One of the best sounding records I own. Seriously. An exemplary remaster and pressing. Buy with confidence.
