Edited 3 years agoBack in 2017, this 3CD/1DVD set presented in digipak format was decent. Loved the bonus vault material and remixes, even the DVD with VHS quality was ok. After buying the stupendous '1999 Super Deluxe' Box set with it's amazing packaging in 2019, I saw how the Deluxe Purple Rain SHOULD'VE been presented. As a special bonus, I added 'Prince & The Revolution: Live (1985)' as a 2 disc set from the mp3s officially sold on iTunes to this 'Purple Rain Deluxe' set. Now a 6 Disc Box.....This is a serious improvement!! -

I'm actually a fan of the remaster; it is more compressed, but that's the nature of the beast in the age of soundbars, mp3s, and streaming. Prince began his habit of mixing his stuff very bright around this time, and the mastering does a great job of toning down the sibilance while retaining the toppy "shine." The low end thumps in all the right ways as well, which is no small feat in remastering any album from the 80s. I'm very happy with this package! -
Edited 7 years agoThe mastering might have been by deaf people, but so far this is the best quality you can get the unreleased material in.
Get this set or the HDTracks only if you, at any point, have thought to yourself "damn, I wish there was more of Purple Rain, except the extras sound horrible not because they are bootlegs recording from the eighties, but because the mastering engineer is a douche." -
What a missed opportunity. The DVD quality is shit- it's like watching a VHS copy . They should have had an option with a Blu Ray.
The liner notes are nice.
