INXS - In Search Of Excellence (12-5-89)
Most fans of INXS will not disagree that Kick was their most successful studio album.
The album was produced by Bob Clearmountain.
Released by the Australian rock band as their sixth studio recording in 1987, Kick has been certified six times platinum by the RIAA, and within a year of its release, the album had achieved gold and platinum status in many countries.
In Canada, the album kicked off four major Top 10 radio and club singles: "New Sensation", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Devil Inside" and "Need You Tonight.”
The "Need You Tonight"/"Mediate" stylish dance/rock hybrid remix was a huge club favorite and not surprisingly it also received DJ-play in the funk clubs.
Kick remains the band's best-selling album in Canada, having earned the diamond certification from CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association).
In 2012, INXS - Kick 25, the 25th Anniversary Super deluxe edition was released which included a 64 page book, a poster and a sticker sheet, albeit the bonus for world-wide DJs was the CD which contained remastered versions of the legendary classic remixes!
Like some other great recordings of the time, Kick fits in well in the genres of alternative rock, pop rock, new wave, funk and hard rock while you can find some of the newer remixes in genres of electronic dance-pop.
Today, Kick is also considered a classic rock album, receiving air-play from many classic rock radio stations around the world.

Is this better than the mfsl from 2011? Words words -
Edited 2 months agoWithout a doubt, this was one of the best records that charted heavily during the Eighties and it was really great hearing these tunes on the radio, and it was everywhere. Even TV, with Kick videos on heavy rotation, and do you know what? It was a delight as Kick is loaded with great material from start to finish, this is great Rock, it was assesible for pop chart fans but was also full of great Rockers also, giving the record more appeal than usual for a Rock album.
I find it curious these days that this record has been somewhat overlooked. Do the critics become more guarded and cynical if Rock has mainstream appeal? Is it because Michael was a heartthrob? I was at college at the time and all the girls, hells bells! even the teachers where mad about him.
Should music not be judged by what hits your ears?
I was really shocked when I heard music critics' on the radio giving INXS a real mashing, saying stuff like dated Funky Rock, Rolling Stones wannabes!! ? and other comments of that nature, I just couldn't believe it, I really felt that this was unfair for a top class ultra talented band with a dynamic, charismatic and likeable front man.
INXS kept the quality taps running back in those days, and there hits where a breath of fresh air and I really believe that Kick needs to be reappraised once again as an absolute classic record.
I was delighted however when Bono, on a big budget TV show really sung the praises of INXS, and he really highlighted for the viewers that INXS where one of the all time great bands and he sincerely lamented the loss of Michael as an irreplaceable loss to music. It was really great hearing Bono say words to that effect proving that the radio critics totally got it wrong making careless and daft remarks.
Another great reminder of how great INXS where is to watch, INXS Live At Wembley Stadium, Michael was on fire as a front man and had the audience eating out of his hands.
INXS where not an overnight success, they worked very hard to get to the crossover quality of Kick, and I'm sure a career highlight of topping the bill and filling Wembley would also have been a source of pride for the band.
Further digging will be very rewarding and satisfying, as they released many records before and after Kick.
My advice is to check them out, and the last time that I looked, Kick was very reasonably priced on vinyl, surely this will not last forever, so it's a no brainer to pick up a copy.
This little review however is for the cassette and it has a marvellous sound and a high quality chrome reel, which I always find reliable and very reassuring. It also has a distinctive bright red feeder timer reel, this combined with the total transparency of the shell looks awesome in the ghetto blaster as you can see everything moving in harmony.
The inlay sleeve has full lyrics, a bit small to be honest, so keep the glasses handy. I most also mention the photos of the band, you can really tell that they where more like a family, and up for a laugh.
If you do not have any INXS, this is a great starting point. Try to track down the Wembley performance also, and if you are an INXS diehard, you will just love this handsome cassette release.

Picked this up very minty for $25. It’s really good, it is a little bright but with a little EQ it is quite nice. And what a great album! I might have had the CD back in the OG Columbia House days, but at any rate never appreciated the album until I got this.

The CD & DSD layers use exactly the same audio (master) and I can’t use the DSD layer but this sounds amazing and is the best digital iteration of this fantastic album to date.
I would like this in 24/88.1 but hey when done properly 16/44.1 can sound amazing. -

My go-to version of this album. I mentioned in a comment below, the first two tracks are...OK. Good, but not really noteworthy. But when "Devil Inside" kicked in, the room was shakin' and it packed a punch I hadn't heard on other versions. Luckily no issues at all with my pressings--flat, dead quiet, no skips like others have reported (and that's over a variety of cartridges). Sadly, it's one of the few Atlantic 75 series records by Analogue Productions that sounds this good. The other few I own are average at best. They're on the discard pile, for sale soon at a Discogs near you. -
Sounds great to me. But I only have a standard CD player and have no way to experience the SACD layer.

I've now had 3 copies of this... All warped. (Bought from Juno, UK)
What's going on here? I really do expect better from AP. Sounded great, but on disc two, it kept jumping. It wouldn't have mattered much if it was at 33rpm, but being 45, the speed made my cartridge jump like crazy.
