Notes
Debut album recorded live at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan on October 30th and 31st, 1968.
First pressings feature the opening line "Kick out the jams, motherfuckers!" on the second track, and liner notes by John Sinclair (2) in the gatefold. These were soon pulled from stores and replaced with censored pressings that had the opening line changed to "Kick out the jams, brothers and sisters!", and the liner notes removed. Later pressings have the uncensored intro and the liner notes restored.

i have red label - runouts ekl 4042 A2 and EKL 4042 B1 , there is also hand etched on side one the beatles o.p.d. i.w.1fr. cannot find any info though everything else is the same as listed to this entry?

My copy has uncensored cover with uncensored intro and 8-15-9 and 8-16-9 on runout.

Edited 29 days agoPressed a lot hotter than my red label censored monarch* (which is in itself a pretty decent) but this is 10/10, even if it's only VG.
*maybe a censored copy with a gold label would be better? I’ve never heard one. -

This is no audiophile demo disc but wow, does this sound great when you know the history! Guitars are powerful and upfront, nice separation (surprisingly) with growling vocals clear in the mix. Modest on the low end. Don’t have an OG to compare but I really love this mix! -
Edited 2 months agoOh jeez. Where to start? The original was far from an audiophile recording or experience. It's an album of a crazy LOUD band recorded live in 1968. It's like a Nonesuch Explorer record - a field recording. This version is great. It sounds like the original in all it's flawed trebly washy glory.

Another stellar release from Rhino. I just listened to this through a pair of cans and this baby kicks like a MotherF'er, I kid you not. Not only does it sound terrific, but it comes in a thick cardboard tip-on gatefold jacket just like back in 1969. Great stuff.!! -
