Notes
Originally released in October 1984.
in 1983 (when Bathory formed) Quorthon, worked part-time at the small record label Tyfon Music.
In late 1983 and early 1984, the label was putting together a compilation of songs by Scandinavian metal bands named: Scandinavian Metal Attack, at the last minute, one of the bands backed out. Tyfon agreed to let Bathory appear on the record as a replacement, and the band recorded two songs for the compilation: "Sacrifice" and "The Return of the Darkness and Evil" in January 1984. The compilation was released in March.
To everyone's surprise, over 95% of fan mail sent to the label after the record's release was dedicated to Bathory.
Tyfon asked the band to record a full-length album.
With his bandmates having moved away, Quorthon recruited Rickard Bergman as bassist and Stefan Larsson as drummer.
On 22 May 1984, they had their first and only rehearsal together before recording the album.
They recorded the songs "Satan My Master" and "Witchcraft", which would later appear on the compilation Jubileum Volume III.
On 14 June the band entered Heavenshore Studio in Stockholm (a converted garage) to record the debut. The studio had a homemade 8-channel tape recorder. Due to the band's tight budget, they ran the recorder at half-speed to fit everything on one master tape.
They also had to work quickly, the recording and mixing were done in somewhere between 32 and 56 hours.

I'm looking to purchase just the cover. If you have a nice cover sleeve but no vinyl for this version, DM me! -

I finally managed to get hold of this pressing.
So I was able to compare it to the Under One Flag version of 1987 as well as the last bootleg released. The sound and mix of it, which is the original, has nothing to do with it. Bigger, heavier, with more bass, amazing!
We do all the work done on this album, each track has its own particular treatment, which makes this album unique.

For all those talking crap: here you have the ripped song from this album, versus a regular pressing from 2014. Two things before anyone comments: "the original / a 2019 Asian release sounds better than this": do you own the original or at least an Asian bootleg to compare? Can you properly RIP an album? Then do it and post it, easier said than done.
Same settings to record both albums. You can clearly notice the compression in the standard version: it is louder, the sound is squashed, and you can hardly appreciate the dynamics.

For those curious about the difference between the regular editions and the Anniversary one: https://youtu.be/HIUrcEwBaR8. There’s a rip from Hades from both releases. -
Edited one month agoA few pops, perhaps three or four, on Side A. Otherwise the copy sounds as good as this sort of record can sound.
Note that it did go through supersonic cleaning before listening. I'll give an update after a second round of cleaning. -

Great bootleg. Sounds just like the record. Has the yellow goat and everything. Really no complaints. Wish the pentagram was printed in yellow like the original instead of black and white, but I'm anal about this kind of thing. My copy has Sacrifice on side B for some reason, but it really doesn't matter as everything is still in order. I wonder if other copies are like this?

There isn't much good to be said about the Black Mark Productions reissues. Terrible remastering. Terribly printed booklet. Nice and blurry ad for other terrible reissues takes up the whole back of the booklet. The goat doesn't have body for some reason.
