Pharoah Sanders – Thembi

Engaging soundstage. Like others have noted, very quiet mastering. Noticeably less muted and boomy than hi res copies on qobuz and the likes. Much more clarity and airiness that lends itself well to this record. While not from master tapes, worthwhile copy to have in my opinion to improve upon the poor sound digital streamers are offering.

Another Impulse/ABC winner of a local pressing. Thank you whatever local distributor, white-collar office-worker decided Impulse LPs needed South African releases back in the early '70s. Free jazz nirvana.

Does anyone know if the mastering on this release is different from the UMe/Third Man Records release from the same year? Thanks.

After a wash my copy sounds pretty large and in charge. A little noise here and there but mostly fine. Definitely sounds more analog than playing Tidal through a hi-res streamer. I got it a few years ago for $30. Can’t say I would pay inflated prices much higher than that.. Worth having for sure

Agree, it's a quiet mastering but remains dynamic and sounded particularly good this week when running it through my Icon Audio/Klipsch speakers. I would recommend this one and a light volume increase is all that is needed for a good dynamic sounding record.

This has been one of the better Verve By Request releases. The mastering is slightly quiet but overall done well. Side B was slightly noisy at the beginning but overall the pressing was pretty quiet and better than my experience with this series so far

A great sounding pressing and mastering. Overall fully engaging sound and enjoyable with a wide soundstage. Having said that, while I don’t have another version of the whole album but when I compare Thembi to the version on my 1970s “The best of Pharoah Sanders”, the older pressing sounds more dynamic with deeper bass. But this does not take away from the overall great job Kevin Reeves has done.

Anything about sound quality on this press? Just bought it, but it will take time to me to receive my copy sadly

Great release. No complaints about the sound - it’s alive and wide. Gatefold packaging, antistatic inner sleeve for the plate. Absolutely quiet surface.
