Notes
There are three versions of the back cover of the original American release:
1st - Has an image of actor Eric Emerson projected upside-down on the wall behind the band. Commonly known as the "Torso" cover (despite showing only Emerson's head and arms), this variant is also referred to as “first state” or the “Emerson Cover.”
2nd - The actor's image is covered by a large black sticker.
3rd - The actor's image is airbrushed out.
Historical info: The actor Eric Emerson (2), protagonist of some multimedia films projected behind the group during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable, filed a lawsuit against the record label for the non-payment of the rights regarding his image that can be seen upside down on the back cover of the first version. This led to the album being temporarily withdrawn from sale, likely in late 1967, while a large black lawsuit sticker was applied to the rear sleeve of remaining stock. On the rear sleeve of all subsequent pressings, the image is airbrushed to obscure Emerson.

I was surprised by how good this sounds. Easily beats presses I've heard that go for 50-100 USD. Check it out.
-
A wonderful sounding copy. 'Heroin' sounds bright and angry. Great separation between instruments throughout.
-
Great analog recording and mastering. This US pressing sounds amazing. The sound is very organic, natural and crispy.

Solid choice for this album instead of shelling out a mortgage payment for an early copy. Find a clean one and you will be satisfied! ( this album is not ever going to sound "great" - whatever that means, but just let it spin and sink into the legendary tracks.)

I just got a copy and like others here have posted the pressing and mastering is exceptional. It may be the alltime best analog mono pressing. It has better sound than my Sundazed reissue (which sounds almost as good as a US Verve original). The only other mono pressing I would love to check out and compare this '78 reissue to would be an original UK mono. -

Just Pulled this Classic out... The wax is flat, rare light surface noise (musta got lucky), and the sound (there is a touch of mud but not bad (it has always had a touch, I believe to combat the highs), the bass is audible yet not punchy but it never was, the guitar breaks through cleanly, the vocal line is clear and on top of the mix) all in all, is good on my set-up...
(Fluance RT-82 w/Acrylic Platter, ATN-XP cart/5 stylus. Nobsound T3 Phono Amp, Aiyima A07 Pro, Kicker KB6B, & 2x Polk PSW10 Subs...Simple Low Cost Setup)...Happy Listening -

Good quality, little surface noise, its a nice heavy weight. I like to peel slowly and see as well. Amazing record. -
Just to chime in on the bootleg debate, i bought my copy at the Hot Topic in the mall where i’m from when i was probably 15.
