It became the band's highest selling non-compilation studio album, reaching the Top 10 in several countries. It did not quite match the sales of its predecessor in the US and was their last album to enter the Billboard Top 200.

It was musically a major step away from the synthesized pop of early Talk Talk, with a sound described by the band as much more 'organic' than their earlier records. The improvisation that was to dominate their later works became evermore apparent in the album's recording process.

Found this pressing in my local record store with the original shrink and hype sticker intact. The LP looked unplayed. Upon dropping the needle, I was stunned by the fidelity. I hear great depths of detail across the entire spectrum of this shimmering disc. It immediately shot up the scale as one of the best sounding albums in my collection. Stick with the original if you can find it.

This is a fantastic pressing. No noise, great separation, and superb clarity. I was relieved at how good this sounds because this stunning transitional album deserves it. This is the record that found the band moving from new wave synth-pop into something new, which would be fully embraced on their next two albums (Spirit of Eden & Laughing Stock). While the Colour of Spring moves away from synthetic sounds, pop songwriting still sporadically underpins the album. But you can also hear the embrace of atmospheric soundscapes that would dominate on Spirit of Eden & Laughing Stock. Two albums that would define the birth of post rock. In reality, you can hear the subgenre's true beginnings here.
