This comes to mind every so often. Sure I posted it here before but can't find it and thread would be locked by now anyway.

Always wondering whether I'll ever find out what happened to it. Hopefully not completely lost forever.

Are you sure this is truly Special K or is that assumed? He wouldn't be in my top few most likely producers based on what I hear.

Has that staple NUT/Nico vibe, or Makai, or maybe Elementz of Noise, Emotif, etc. There were a lot of contenders making that sound

I agree. I guess the drop is more sort of jump-up, but overall it's darker than the Special K stuff I have heard. Special K was just associated with the file and previous online discussion - I have no detail on why that was assumed, only that it was 'under an alias', although it appearing to not have been released makes that aspect somewhat redundant. Maybe the clip came from Don FM and that is why? Skott

Yeah, it always reminded me of Militant Moods on this, so wondered whether it was a Terminal Outkasts tune - https://www.discogs.sie.com/master/64487-Terminal-Outkasts-Deadlock-Militant-Moods

I mean it could be lots of people - Twisted Anger, Dom and Roland, Decoder, Tech Itch (the most blatant Dillinja copiers of the time) edging into that sound, and all the Emotif/Dread/Penny Black releases that sound like this. I've heard John B tunes from 96 that sound like that, Teebone, Marv Caine, Mampi Swift etc. Even Marc Mac was making things with that combination of Paris/Amens.
But I think the lack of a blatant soul/hip hop sample character leans away from the soul and b-boys to the darker sci-fi purist of my formers that I mentioned. I would rule out No-U-Turn as I can't hear that real beat overdrive/reverb sound that I can't take too long of from 96-98.

It doesn't have the raw darkness of say a Position Chrome tune but it sure sounds like something I'd hear coming out of , or North America back when the d&b darkness was spreading out...

This has prompted me to find some great Amen smashers I slept on from the above

Good discussion. I enjoy the challenge of the tune ID threads. I've found quite a few great tunes over the years simply going through an entire artist or label's catalog blindly looking for a track that my gut tells me is so and so.

For quite a few early releases Renegade Hardware Future Forces etc was just this sound again and again
