Can app be used to read a barcode not in the database?

At the BMG Direct label page it says:
For releases with a barcode (Code 39), scan the barcode with the Discogs app barcode search option and enter the results.
That was written in 2021 by star_man_20.
But when I scan a barcode in the app that it can't find in the database, it just says "Sorry We couldn't find a match for that barcode", rather than display what the barcode decoded to (and, ideally, copy it to the OS text clipboard). It sounds like this feature worked more usefully in 2021. Is there still some way to get the decoded value displayed?
Also, when I try to scan a BMG Direct barcode, I don't even get a "Sorry". It just doesn't recognize the barcode at all. Do I have a bad barcode, or is this something else in the app that has broken since 2021 and now it can't recognize any barcodes in the BMG Direct format? For an example of what these barcodes look like, see Anton Rubinstein – Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, Stephen Gunzenha - Symphony No. 2 "Ocean" (Complete 7-Movement Version).
Edit: I should have mentioned I'm using the app on an iphone. -

The barcode has to be entered in the BAOI. The BMG catalog number should only be entered as a Code 39 barcode if there is a barcode with the catalog number.
If the BMG catalog number has been added as a catalog number in the LCCN, it can be found with a search.

What is the release? And what is the BMG catalog number? Understand that the Club Edition has to be (correctly) added to Discogs for it to be searched for. -

I've not followed the app progress closely as I gave up using it several years ago, but I think it's been completely re-written in the last year or so. In keeping with discogs re-write policy it's probably worse than the old one.
You can scan a barcode with any barcode reader app that's available for your phone, though, as long as it shows you the decoded data. Can't help with a specific app; I don't use an iPhone.
Regarding the specific barcode on the Rubinstein CD, maybe it's just a poorly-printed barcode. I scanned it myself from that image (was surprised it worked since it was so small) and my barcode app returned D121398. It looks like a CODE39 barcode, so maybe the new app doesn't read the less common barcode formats that appear on releases. -

I thought the sentence on the BMG Direct page was saying that to add a barcode value to a new release, I could "scan the barcode with the Discogs app" and then "enter the results" into the BAOI field. I guess you're saying that's never actually been possible?
What is the release? And what is the BMG catalog number?
The catalog number is D 105954, and the release is not in the database, but a very similar release without a barcode is here: Orff* : Sylvia McNair, John Aler, Håkan Hagegård, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra & Chorus*, Leonard Slatkin - Carmina Burana
Do you have the Discogs app and a copy of a BMG Direct release that is in the database? Does scanning the barcode with the Discogs app work for you? Or, if you have the Discogs app but no BMG Direct release, are you able to scan xceque was able to do using a non-Discogs app? -

If the BMG edition 1) isn't in the database, or 2) is but the release page doesn't have the catalog number added as a Code 39 barcode, scanning the barcode won't find the release.

Yes, Yes, and Yes. Any app that can read QRC and barcodes should be able to read a code 39 UPC.
As an example, Faith No More - Album Of The Year is in my collection. The release page has "Barcode (Code 39): D118612". Using the Discogs app, scanning the UPC has the release show in the results. -

Thanks for checking. Did you use the Discogs iOS app or Android?
Faith No More releases.
But when I scan this image of a UPC barcode, from an obscure release that I have not yet entered into the database, I do get the "Sorry" message. That difference is what's making me suspect that the iOS Discogs app does not recognize any Code 39 barcodes. -

Here's a close-up of the barcode on my CD. If you try to scan that with the Discogs app, do you get the "Sorry We couldn't find a match for that barcode" message?
No, I got 26 possible results. There could be a bug for the iOS scanner... Hopefully this thread will get the attention of staff. You may also want to start a Service Request and note this thread. -

In the interim, hope you add your pressing with the barcode to the database. Cheers! -

Oh, also, I have a separate scanner app for QRC codes.... Mixer Bax QR Scanner is a free app. if you don't have a similar app, try installing through the Apple store and see if it will scan, or if it even helps the Discogs app.
