11 October 1999 was a Monday. Album were released on Mondays for many years continuing way past 1999. I checked this as above states released 08 October 1999 in the UK. My promo copy also states 'RELEASED 11TH OCTOBER' via a sticker Helena McGeough, Promotions. With a UK mobile number and a Parlophone sign and lettering

Edited 5 years agoSongs I like: For Your Own Good (only due to Rollo's production). In Denial (beautiful).
I know it's subjective, but I was very surprised by not liking anything else on this much. I didn't find it as terrible as others here, but it was all just.... uninteresting for me. -
Edited 8 years agoThe PSB album with the most cringeworthy songs by far. Which is too bad, because things start off nicely. While there may not be too much substance to For Your Own Good and Closer To Heaven, they set the scene perfectly: the following I Don't Know What You Want is essential PSB. A foreshadowing (Happiness Is An Option) hits the brakes but Drunk comes to the rescue. Arguably their last ever effortless ballad. The rehashing of an old b-side (Vampire aka I Get Excited) signals a new low, but after the nice if fluffy Radiophonic things go downhill so fast that I prefer not name names. 3/5 (solely on the strength of IDK and Drunk and because it's the Pet Shop Boys, really)

And the last good single put out by the duo "I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Any More".
Well, all good things come to an end. -
I felt extremely betrayed by this album. Up to 1999, I had at least liked virtually every PSB song; most of them I loved. There are maybe two songs on this album that I can stomach. The production credits for Craig Armstrong explain things a little, but where did this come from? "Vampires" and "Footsteps" are two of the worst songs I've ever heard, in any genre. I hoped that this would be a one-off slip into banality. Sadly, they never recovered.

Edited 20 years agoIt looks like Nightlife hasn't got much cred with the discogers. However, it is honestly a smooth luscious record! Even if you are into Boards of Canada, Aphex or Autechre, one spin of this record will have you jammin', albeit in the privacy of your bedroom!
