I discovered this album renting it from my local library at an age when I couldn't yet afford to buy records. It sounds more accessible nowadays, although I was mesmerized back then. It remains one of my favorite Industrial music release, if not my favorite.
This is true industrial mind you; the genuine first wave Industrial sound. Not much to do with what folks call 'Industrial' nowadays, which in fact is Electronic Body Music or Industrial Metal Rock, the former appeared simultaneously in Belgium, and the later followed, mostly from the US.
Timeless release anyway, which also made me look into the German Patientenkollektiv.
We should still turn illness into a weapon. -
Sozialistisches Patienten Kollektiv, Dark industrial from the early 80's. Recorded in 1981. The Music of SPK moves between a triangle with in the three points: Byzantine music, Dark Industrial and 80's Pop. This one is almost pure Industrial. Along with "Auto da Fe" this is the one I suggest most if interested in SPK. Except if you're into a lighter Pop sound, this one has a rather heavy sound!
This one will for sure put your playback installation on a test. The album is very dynamic, both in frequency range and amplitude. Fat basslines floating in a noisy environment. Sharp industrial drums, subtle voices, rythmic play between all musical elements, metallic sounds, all this make this record a lust for the ear. Pure Rawness combined with musical finesse and a very conscious approach towards the sound timbre. -
The epitome of frightening electronic industrial music. Extremely dark collages of drones, metal percussion, and creepy samples that include interviews with mental patients and instructions how to make napalm. The distorted black and white photograph of masked musicians on the back only increases the disturbing atmosphere this record creates. A classic of its genre. Abandon all hope ye who enter here.
