Edited 6 years agoTim Maia's story is full of striking, fascinating ages, and this 1982 album deserves a great spot in the biography of the master of Brazilian Soul-Funk.
Many Tim Maia for the 1978 record "Disco Club" hits; others recall Tim Maia from the legendary records of the rational phase between 1974 and 1975; still others recall the important post-Rational phase, which brought up large records such as the 1976 record and the English record, which, although released in 1978, was recorded shortly after the Rational phase, ie around However, the "Nuvens"(Clouds) record of 1982 remained long forgotten, that is, it remained in the "clouds", as an analogy to the name of the record itself, due to the fact that it had a very bad distribution, this record it did not reach the people, the radios, the other cities; on the contrary, the registry remained in the city of Rio, having a small distribution in SP in the following years. So make no mistake about it: it is not an easy record to find, as it is an independent, limited-edition record distributed by Tim Maia himself through his Seroma label. Recall that the same Seroma was responsible for the distribution of his legendary records of the Rational phase, which, incidentally, had a bad distribution. We can conclude that Tim was a incredible artist, but on the other hand, a poor distributor of his own records. :)
The record gathers great tracks that fill the gap of the Brazilian Boogie Funk, reflecting what happened in the world scene of Black Music at that moment. In this musical spectrum, it is worth mentioning the track "Hadock Lobo Esquina Com Matoso" - a sentimental trip by Tim Maia, inspired by the sounds and phrases of Earth, Wind & Fire for its beginnings in the Tijuca neighborhood, in the North Zone of Rio, in the homonymous street where many musicians like him, Erasmo Carlos and Roberto Carlos began their musical trajectories; the track "A Festa" is basically a pioneering Rap by Tim Maia, reminiscent of the style of the first sounds of Sugar Hill Gang and Kurtis Blow, on a funk groove base designed by his band; the "Ar Puro" track sounds like an "Ecological Funk", at a time when few people still worried about preserving the environment in Brazil; completing the funk boogie block from the record, we have the track "O Trem", in vocal and instrumental version, perhaps one of Tim's most imaginative moments in that timeless record;
Certainly, this is one of Tim Maia's best records, which can be easily placed on the same level as other great records like Rational 1, Rational 2, Tim Maia 1976 and Tim Maia 1978 (in English). A record that exuded creativity, musical imagination and good taste. But unfortunately, a record little publicized and that had little impact on the Brazilian musical scene of the time. Tim Maia, moreover, had a lot of faith in the registry and was quite surprised and shocked by the failure. At this time, he even began to think critically about the advantages and disadvantages of musical independence. And perhaps driven by the disadvantages, he decided to opt for a more commercial repertoire in his next record, "O Descobridor dos Sete Mares".
