Rust In Peace is the best heavy metal album of all time, it also the most underrated. No question. There isn't anything about this album that is flawed. From the opening riff of Holy Wars... The Punishment Due to the final chorus of Rust In Peace... Polaris, this album is an undisputed masterpiece of metal. It has everything you could ask for in a metal album, technical and beautiful guitar solos from Marty Friedman and Dave Mustaine, some of Dave's best guitar riffs, David Ellefson's wackiest baselines, Nick Menza's always unbeleivable drumming that challenges even Dave Lumbardo for bragging rights, it has everything.
Every song on this album is perfect. Holy Wars... The Punishment Due is one of the most notable songs in all of thrash period. The riffs in this song are some the most memorable in all of metal, Dave Mustaine's solo at the end is one of the most chaotic and brilliant of his entire career. There's a reason why it's the only solo of his career that he only needed one take. Hangar 18 is the only song I've ever heard that has a 3 minute solo trade off between Mustaine and Friedman, there are 11 solos in that song. Each one with something new to offer, all equally mesmorizing. Take No Prisoners is a clever, thrash explosion. Five Magics is a slow, complex song with an unbelievable solo at the end from Mustaine. Poison Was The Cure is a perfect re imagining of the days of Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!. Lucretia, while the riff is hard to take seriously at times, is a very beautiful and melodic song, somewhat of a breather on the album, but still perfect. Tornado of Souls is one of the stand out points of the album. It has hands down, one of the best guitar solos of all time, of any genre, one of Dave's most complex riffs, and just and amazing performance from everyone. Dawn Patrol is a very clever intro to the unbelievable title track. Rust In Peace... Polaris has one of the best drum intros of all time. It rivals songs like The End by The Beatles, it's that good. And the rest of the song is a thrash explosion of awesomeness. It's actually one of the first songs that Dave Mustaine wrote. But it fits perfectly with this album.
If you have not listened to Rust In Peace, then you are missing out on understanding what makes metal metal. It is the very definition of the entire heavy metal genre. There are so many albums out there that are considered the best, yet they've never even heard of this album. Everyone says albums like Master of Puppets are the best, and while it is an amazing album, most true Metallica fans don't even think it's their best album. But most people who heard this album call it an unforgettable masterpiece. So if you haven't listened to this album, GO LISTEN TO IT NOW!!! If you have, go listen to it again, and make your day ten times better.
