Dave Mustaine rage for his cousins Metallica success had always been like gasoline for the motor of his creativity. The continue competition pushed forward every limit of thrash metal music: aggression, speed, structural complexity and melodic research. After the storm generated by Metallica black album, Mustaine tried to fight Ulrich & Co. in melodic territory, slowing the vortex of riffs and simplifying the architectural complexity of the songs, in search of the perfect mid tempo riff to headbang and easy listening melodies to sing in live concerts. The result is a good album - great at times! - of classical heavy metal with the typical shrill and metallic Megadeth sound. But there is no trace of Mustaine schizophrenic lightning: so the magic of the past faded away looking for commercial success.
