Edited one year agoThis version sounds absolutely incredible. I did a side by side with the 2006 European repress I owned prior to getting this and this version is superior in every way. Bass, clarity, and soundstage. An excellent sounding record and one of, if not the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

I’m convinced that everyone complaining about sibilance are
1) New to the album
2) New to records
3) Green to turntables and setup
It’s a 30 year old hip hop album. That’s how it’s been sounding for allllll these years. It’s not a steely Dan record. You really want your ears to bleed? Go grab a gang Starr record off the shelf. I’ll wait…
You’re starting with a record that has these issues already. And then exasperating the problem with either a shitty cartridge with a shitty stylus, a shitty turntable that doesn’t offer the ability to properly set it up. Or all of the above.
There’s zero sibilance with any of my copies, Including the US 1st pressing when played on my deck running a correctly set up shibata stylus. It smooth as butter.
Change it over to the same deck with an aging elliptical stylus, and yeah there’s some hot spots here and there.
Also, if you’ve got a worn out record, that will add to the affect.
Don’t go buying up every copy that comes out with the intention of sibilance disappearing. Not gonna happen. -
I was today years old when I discovered that DJ Premier sequenced and mastered Illmatic.
He did a proper job on it. -
Was Ego Trips best Album and also most disappointing album of '94.
"...An album that simultaneously dazzled and frustrated discerning Hip Hop ears for what it delivered and what it failed to live up to..." -
Finally got my hands on this original pressing. The clarity, fidelity, and bass are OUTSTANDING. Reminds me of other ‘90s records with superior original pressings, like the RATM debut.
