Never understood all the hate this one gets. The argument is that this and the next and last one are Westerberg solo offerings disguised as replacement records? Who gives a fuck. All the best Replacements recordings are primarily the constructs of him and Bob. Unfortunately, Bob couldn't hang and was too big a fuckup for the biggest fuckup band of the time to record on this or the the previous one. Don't get me wrong. I fucking love the Stinson boys, but this is Paul's band--even if Bob gets that credit.
I never had an issue with the slick production. I actually prefer it to the Bearsville Dead Man's Pop sessions. There's nothing wrong with a little but of cheese. Especially in the context of the time of it's recording. Clearly, Westerberg wanted this one to be a commercial success and unlike many other Mats fans, I have no fucking problem with that. These dudes had paid their dues and to wanted to be compensated for it is fine by me. Especially if the record is as fucking gorgeous as this one is.
For me, and ittedly, I prefer the ballads Westerberg wrote to the more aggressive punk tunes of Replacements Stink and Sorry ma', the best Replacements records start with Let it Be, then Tim and then I'd say this one--even over Pleased to Meet Me. Three incredible albums, by the greatest American band of the 80s. The fact that Tommy and Paul are still alive and not recording and working together is heartbreaking to me. -
Edited one year agoMastering credit goes to Bob Ludwig. Matrices do show “MASTERDISK” where Ludwig was employed as chief engineer until 1992. Did Ludwig personally cut this lacquer?

I agree, this is a great album! But what's the story with the "I'm Sorry" etched into the runout? Sorry for what? Who's sorry?
