Liverpool-based TBR began the decade diving headlong into the shoegazer movement, then attempted to mirror the multi-genre influence of 60s bands, before shifting gear entirely at the 1990s’ mid-point (presumably under pressure from Alan McGee at Creation Records, chasing a mainstream hit not authored by Oasis).

The approach paid off in spades as, helped on its way by incessant spins on the Radio One breakfast show, Wake Up Boo peaked at #9 – suring new entries by Radiohead, the Stone Roses and Faith No More to claim the coveted prize of highest new entry – and thereby established its creators as chart thoroughbreds (six further Top 40 singles followed, including the Top 20 hit C'mon Kids). That build from verse to pre-chorus to chorus reaches a peak of euphoria and promise, as all sterility evaporates.
