This is an amazing and classic album. The way that the songs switch between the high energy, rocking songs, and the sing along type of keyboard/piano driven songs with poetic lyrics. Porcelina of the Vast Oceans is an example of how they combine these two moods in one song, listening to that song particularly takes me on an emotional roller coaster. The soft verses that I can hum switch into the ionately sung chorus seamlessly. Songs like these are my favorite.

Double albums arouses a magnetic fascination in every ambitious musician. In compact disc era, when albums duration was increased - and artists pretentiousness was decreased! - double albums were isolated experiments made by brave composers with a giant ego. Billy Corgan was one of these. After Siamese Dream success, he was firmly determined to release all his creativity in a gigantic opus that could contain all his different artistic personalities. Mellon Collie is the dark side of the previous album: noisier, heavier and angrier than everything the band had recorded before then, but at the same time enriched by the most romantic and delicate ballads of the band. It is a grunge album that goes further grunge through darkwave atmospheres, psychedelic references and the splendor of progressive rock fancy. Alternative rock at the maximum of magnificence.
