In Dirt opening scream hides the orgasm of an heroin injection and, at the same time, the piercing pain of the defeat. Lucid awareness of a self-destructive condition near to the point of no return and no will to leave this gloomy situation of apathetic contemplation. In this weakness, and in its complacency, Dirt ties itself to grunge disillusion, in opposition to the apparently incontestable energy exalted by 80s music. But Alice in Chains music is unique in Seattle scene, thanks to an overwhelming vocal flow, hypnotic and floating, melted with heavy and oppressive metal riffs. The result is a vertiginous loss of control driving to a disturbing paranoia, a psychedelic spiral in perennial deformation and dilatation, as an horrible bad trip. Shame, failure and desire of death: the real ending of “sex, drugs & rock n’ roll” era. Symbol of the 90s music.
