Notes
Early 1970s stereo reissue with green labels and gold text but NO deep groove. H stamp in runouts and 1-inch label pressing ring indicate pressing by RCA Hollywood post-1970 but before Contemporary moved its pressing to Monarch.
Jacket does NOT have printed top banners as seen on original stereo release Ornette Coleman - Tomorrow Is The Question!; instead this has the Contemporary catalog number on front top right and 90069 address on bottom of rear slick (1963-1979). Inner sleeve is generic white poly-lined paper sleeve with center hole (submission copy was purchased sealed).
Submission copy is pressed on 140g standard-weight vinyl, NOT Dynaflex lightweight vinyl; however, given examples of other Contemporary reissues from the early 70s which have the 1-inch RCA pressing ring and ARE pressed on Dynaflex vinyl closer to 100g or less (see Sonny Rollins - Sonny Rollins And The Contemporary Leaders), such a Dynaflex variant of this release may exist. Contemporary labels and jackets never included any printed indication of Dynaflex.
The metalwork used for this pressing was used for multiple other reissues in the 1960s and 1970s:
- Earlier pressing (pre-1970) Ornette Coleman - Tomorrow Is The Question! has green labels AND deep groove, but same lacquer information (D5/D3) as this release.
- Concurrent pressing (early 1970s) Ornette Coleman - Tomorrow Is The Question! has BLACK labels and 1-inch pressing ring (no deep groove), and same lacquer information (D5/D3) as this release.
- Later pressing (post-1973) Ornette Coleman - Tomorrow Is The Question! has YELLOW labels, same lacquer information (D5/D3) as this release plus additional Monarch stamp and delta codes etched in runouts (ie. pressed by Monarch using older RCA Hollywood metal).
Recorded at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles. "Lorraine" was recorded January 16, 1959. "Turnaround" and "Endless" were recorded February 23, 1959. The selections on Side 1 were recorded in one session, the night of March 9-10, 1959.
