This sounds probably really close to what was on the original tape with little modification as I assume Kevin didn't assume it necessary. But, the One-step is definitely the best this album can sound. It sounds as if you revived Marvin and had him rerecord it with modern equipment and the best engineers. Some people don't prefer that sound, but I do.

I have had a few pressings including MOFI one step. This one is my favorite by far. I have 3 copies with no pressing issues.

This is my first Kevin Grey cut, and it is a very nice sounding cut, but I would definitely recommend the original over this one. The individual instruments can be heard more on the KG, but that kind of ruins the breathy atmosphere that I like a lot in the original. Also the bass is pretty hot and doesn’t have as much tone to it compared to the original.
The KG is definitely not hard to listen to, and if you prefer it over the original I think your opinion is completely valid, it’s just not for me.
Played on an ATLP120, amplified by an MCS 3226 reciever/preamp and RCA SP120 speakers. -
Beautiful amount of instrument separation! You can hear almost everything the bassist is doing at all times, and it sounds like marvin is in the room with me! I 100% recommend.

Edited 16 days agoI’ve owned a few copies of What’s Going On through the years. Most of the 70’s pressings I’ve heard or owned didn’t sound good. By that I mean, this record was played a lot by anyone who owned it. People didn’t listen to it once and put it on the shelf. A lot of Motown records are like that tbh. Especially Motown singles.
This reissue is a no doubt excellent version to start with. Or to replace your worn out copy with. It sounds fantastic , warm and vibrant. Clean press. The music is just sparkling as write this. No review of the content. Everyone knows this is a masterpiece. I feel on this site, we should be reviewing the sound not the content. I can’t recommend this enough. -
Edited 9 months agoI have a NM original. This blows that pressing out of the water. This has better separation, better dynamics, and more depth. Buy this with confidence.

Awful pressing quality, GZ media at its worth... First copy had non fill parts, second copy still has noise on the same song (maybe God doesn't like Inner City Blues?). Mastering is nice, music itself is great, but this pressing sucks

Edited one year agoSounds very soothing. Very soulful, and lively, but not that different from streaming. Very worth picking up for $30, but if it were $60, it would be harder for me to recommend it.
