Edited 4 years agoTricky has two 5-star albums in my book: this one and Nearly God. It's a shame his later work got a little too self-indulgent with too much guest-vocalitis. Maxinquaye is so lush, it has a pretty-garden feel that other trip-hop doesn't quite have. It all flows nicely, tho' Black Steel is the undoubted highlight. Having Martina sing it ("Nevertheless they cannot understand that I'm a black man, and I could never be a veteran") was a touch of subversive genius, elevating a political anthem to something artistically beautiful.
