Edited one year agoAlbum Revolution #1:
After I finally listened to "The Three Degrees" "Maybe" album, I was wondering why "Roulette Records" didn't follow it with another release...The only thing they did was release singles like "I Won't Let You Go" and "I Wanna Be Your Baby", which didn't generate any buzz....With that, the group was either dropped from the label or they left.....
THAT WAS GOOD NEWS!!!!!!! What!!!???!!!, you might say?
Well, it brought them to the doorsteps of "Kenny Gamble" and "Leon Huff" and "Philadelphia International Records".....
Fast forward, ""Fayette Pinkney", "Sheila Ferguson" and Valerie Holiday", were brought into "Sigma Sound Studios", and along with "Gamble & Huff", they got to work on "The Three Degrees" Self Titled album.....Now this is "The Three Degrees"!!!!!!! It is an Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate Crown Jewel of an album, laced with Soulful Lush Sleek songs, brought out by the groups unmistakable Blended Vocals.....
The album started with the serious and yet funny "Dirty Ol' Man"....The way the Ladies talked about that "Dude", and how trifling he was, was absolutely Priceless!!!!!
"Can't You See What You're Doing To Me" is just a nice, sweet t with no Lead Vocal Singer.....It was the perfect t to hear that perfectly "Three Degrees Blended Harmony".....
"A Woman Needs A Good Man", is a two tone t, that at one point has a Soulful Lush Melody, then breaks down into a Mid Eastern type, yet Soulful Groove....
Then there is the Ultimate Hit, "When Will I See You Again"....This smooth Groove gained the hearts of everyone, and it has gone down as one of the most endearing "Philly Soul Classics".....
"I Didn't Know" is a very bouncy t, with the Ladies sweet Vocals, laced with that Classic Philly Soul Sound...
From what I heard from people, "I Like Being A Woman", has rubbed some the wrong way, saying that it sounds kinda dated...They may be right, but I think it still sounds terrific....
"If And When" is a Drama filled Slow Jam, both Lyrically and Musically....Having "Sheila Ferguson" describe the hurt and pain of a lost Love, along with that signature "MFSB" Extravaganza of Orchestrations, and the groups background Vocals that just floats over the 7 minute Slow Jam is absolutely FANSTASTIC!!!!!!.....
My absolute favorite on here is the perfect closer "Year Of Decision"....It is a call to action song with a jumping but smooth Philly Soul t....I personally feel like it is way too short, because I always repeat it at least 4 times!!!!
This was the perfect album to usher the Ladies into the world of "The Sound of Philadelphia"....It brought the group into the worlds stage, and the public loved them....I bet you "Roulette Records" were kicking themselves!!! But then again, in my opinion (as we would see in the future), nobody (and I mean nobody) could do for "The Three Degrees", what "Gamble & Huff" did for them!!!!!
Be that as it may, this is hands down, one of the most celebrated "Philly Soul Classic" albums......
