Edited 6 months agoSide 1 (A1-A3) is challenging to say the least for most any Jazz fan. On side 2 it gets a little more traditional in presentation. I bought this On CD back in '86 and wasn't ready for what was inside the jewel case. I recently picked up the vinyl at a great price, and my mature ears and mind were able to enjoy this where my younger self was at a loss.

as noted challenging listen...requires mature free jazz blended ears. Important to note that you have two Coleman's on this album his son Denardo Coleman is on drums which perhaps stretched this album more as his son is from his school and had the freedom to ""streeeeeetch"" as indicated in this albums performance. THis is true Avant Garde jazz and again as noted a multiple listen with your favorite beverages and additives ...then it will hit you as a major work of art. Graduate School Stuff!

Marked PROMO.
I when this first came out. As a devoted Metheny fan, I ran to the record store and bought it, listened to it once, then tucked it away forever.
Decades later, I snagged this clean copy for $5 and am listening with more mature jazz ears. It is much more listenable. I have since spent years as a gigging jazz guitarist, even delving into some Ornette-esque free jazz at times.
There's much to be enjoyed in this record, though it may not be apparent at first. Approach with caution. -
I'm reviewing a second copy here. Super clean, spotless, silent. I actually forgot I already had a great copy and bought a second one. Who wants this one?
Sound quality is amazing. The content is a little rough, as this is my least favorite Pat Metheny record, but of course he is channeling the classic release by Ornette Coleman, "Free Jazz".
