Shantel continues his exploration of Eastern European fusion with PLANET PAPRIKA, mixing a minor rap with a more traditional refrain on the title track and “Citizen of Planet Paprika,” while evoking musical ships ing in the night with “Wandering Stars.” “Being Authentic” mixes what some would consider the ‘real sound’ with a more modern chant. But if you want authentic lyrics, the seemingly sampled lyrics on “Sura Ke Mastura” would be the way to go. The taraf horns come back in full force with “Usti, Usti Baba,” and “Eyes of Mine.” In more musical blending, a thick bass slides onto “Binaz in Dub” to accompany the processed vocals and echoing keys. But “Beauties from Athina” and “Ex Oriente Lux” return to more traditional sounds, though not without those modern touches. Though not as immediate as his previous album, this album still is plenty of fun.
