Edited 9 months agoA most often overlooked part of Brian Eno is his 90s era. Nerve Net shows Brian Eno embracing the 90s rhythm's with downtempo, techno, dub and even to some extent, industrial music with some little success. Leading the way is the single 'Fractal Zoom' with its eerie sci-fi detective story. These basslines are sure to catch the longtime Eno fans off guard like in 'Wire Shock' or 'My Squelchy Life'. Some of these songs remind me of tracks in his other album 'The Drop' like the mysterious crime drama filled 'Pierre in Mist'. Not all of them are totally successful. Some feel pretty basic even if it is 1992. This is almost like a soundtrack to a murder mystery. If you combined Art of Noise, added a dash of demented, mysterious and drama - you would have something like Nerve Net. In some ways, they sound like muzak and I think that's where this album falls a but short. Short on depth, ,short on ideas and short on atmosphere. There is one song that saves this cd for me besides Fractal Zoom and that is the wonderful and moving 'The Roil, The Choke'. The ending of it reminds of it and the piano reminds me of the Apollo album. This album needed more moments like this and more ambience and less 5 or 6 songs that could have been 2 or 3 tops. 'All Click' although well produced, reminds me of the bad parts of Strange Cargo series. Think 'It's Time to Get Wize'. A little corny but with O,K. instrumental parts as is 'Distributed Being' but its embarrassing heavy metal riffs ruins that song. I would probably avoid this album and just get the Fractal Zoom cd single. It has 'The Roll, The Choke' as the B-Side and plenty of excellent remixes by Moby on it. This rating is just below my 6 score which means even if I was a completist of a certain artist, I would have to avoid buying this if I had a second chance. Not a high point for Brian Eno.
Overall Score: 56/100 -
Amazing record! As usual Eno takes things to a new level. Just discovered it through spotify. Amazing!
