Donald Byrd’s Byrd in Flight is a killer album, and this pressing does it justice. The sound is smooth and rich, with Byrd’s trumpet cutting through perfectly. The vinyl is flat, quiet, and the whole package is — from the sleeve to the artwork. Definitely a record that’s going to be on high rotation at my place. Highly recommend!

Flat record, quiet vinyl, wonderful music. I hear an extremely wide soundstage, if you can call it a soundstage...it's Byrd coming out of the left speaker and the rest of the band coming out of the right. You can hear the trumpet tones reverberating in the studio space; you get a real sense of the acoustics of the room. Drums and bass are big and bold with plenty of detail. Piano tone is somewhat pallid by comparison. Instruments are somewhat separated, but there is definitely a sense of many sounds coming from a small space on the right. Great record, well worth the asking price. RTI did an outstanding job on this one.

Unbelievable album, both content-wise and quality of pressing-wise. Many of us missed out on it during its original Tone Poet release few years ago, patiently awaiting this album's restock. Extremely low noise floor, flat, and on higher volume fills the room like a concert hall. To have Byrd, Mobley, McLean and Watkins on the same album is a treat to the ears. Just fantastic.

So sad that they can't do a mono reissue of this record. We've easily done a shoot out with over 50 people - normal listening people with no pretentions to audiophile / stereo / mono / whatever. Nobody picks the TP version vs the mono Classic Records version - nobody ! Play the TP version - and they're impressed but then play the mono - "no comparison". That's all I can say. This was released in mono by BN in 1960. Why did they wait until 1966 to release in stereo. I'm guessing RVG thought it sucked in stereo like most people who have done the comparison. Just it's always about the money first and music second - so f...in sad.
Do your own comparison if you can. -
SO GLAD this is back in print. Picked up from my local record store today, and I am not disappointed. Fantastic album, flawless pressing, LOVE IT!

Perfect example of what the Tone Poet series does well. Slightly obscure title, modern remastering and stunning sound. Excellent pressing. And at a fair price.

Edited 3 years agoSpectacular recording. Little boy blue is the best and of an almost unnatural beauty. Just for this song alone you should listen to this record. Byrds trumpet sounds distorted on that track but that could be due to a “hot take”. Although not his best its a great record.

Little Boy Blue is hauntingly beautiful. Too bad my copy has a few clicks in the best parts. But as my other TPs have also been, sound quality is fantastic.
