Edited 2 months agoThis 2003 mix from Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and Plus One is a personal journey through some of the musical influences that shaped them into world-beating hip hop turntablists and producers.
The mix opens with a wide-ranging selection of '70s cop-show funk (Lalo Schifrin), ska-pop (The Specials), soul (24 Carat Black) and hip hop (Kool G Rap, London Posse) from both sides of the Atlantic, sharing a common theme of social inequality, as well as the Perverts' excellent mixing.
From these laidback beginnings, the set gradually builds up to the big drum, turntablist assault of Dr Octagon's "Bear Witness", DJ Shadow's "Entropy" and a trio of headbanging hip hop greats from Schoolly D, Showbiz & AG and Gang Starr, taking a breather only for the epic orchestral funk of Mickey & The Soul Generation. This six-track sequence is hip hop DJing at its best - impeccable, eclectic song-selection improved by judicious sequencing, turntablism and editing by the DJ.
The Robin Hoodz version of M.O.P's "Ante Up" is not as good as the original, but the quality of the set soon resumes, with a variety of contrasting speeds and moods courtesy of classic soul, reggae and hip hop from Minnie Riperton, Sister Nancy and Blackalicious.
The Perverts end the mix by foraying into faster drum & bass and finally a mid-tempo breaks track of their own - the right idea for keeping the mix eclectic, but the lower quality of the tracks resulting in an anti-climactic ending.
Some turntablist DJs get the balance wrong between musical beauty and turntablism, but the Scratch Perverts show how to use the latter to complement the former (despite being capable of a six-handed scratch-fest that would blow their competitors out of the water). Overall, an impressive, accomplished take on the multi-genre mixtape that is the highlight of the "Beaningood" mix series. (9)
