Probably the best U2 album ever (although I find it hard to choose between this and The Joshua Tree). Produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, they took the band to a whole new level with additional depth and new layers to the sound. The original pressing LP sounds so much better than the CD (very muddy and indistinct). This album pretty much defined the U2 sound for me, and the soundscapes added by Brian Eno impart an air of mysterious unearthliness to the sound. Side 1 contains all the major hits, and Side 2 is more introspective, starting with the ambient soundscape 4th of July, which Brian Eno created from recordings of the band warming up.
