Willette's debut as a leader for Blue Note is a keeper. Highlights include "Whatever Lola Wants", "High N' Low" and the title track. The vinyl sounds wonderful - plenty of low end, crystal clear percussion, and a warm, expansive soundstage. My copy plays flawlessly, with zero surface noise.

Sensational, Just sensational. Forget Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon and Jackie McLean for a minute and listen to this guy: Fred Jackson is astonishing. This is what the TPs are all about….hidden gems in music and artists

Amazing pressing and album. So deep!
If you like/love it, don't miss "Grant's First Stand", the first Grant Green' album on Blue Note. It was recorded 2 days before with the same musicians. The vibe is quite the same with the guitar more ahead. A perfect pair, it could have been a double album. -
This “Hidden Gem” is one of my Tone Poets that ends up making it to the turntable quite a bit. It just sounds so “live” and right there with you.

As good as any Tone Poet I own!! Songs are driving and uplifting, amazing Grant Green Guitar, keys are next level, as is sax. Silent vinyl. So good!

For me the sax of Fred Jackson comes close to stealing the show on this “hidden gem” of the Blue Note catalogue. To be sure everyone shines and this is a great example of what the Tone Poet series is all about. Superb pressing and glorious sounding record.

Another beautiful Blue Note Tone Poet series LP! Any chance to get Grant Green on a Blue Note session is good enough reason to get this record. Highly enjoyable and exciting music packed in a hi-gloss gatefold cover with photos. Thanks Blue Note!

Edited 4 years agoMy pressing has a few distorted parts (in B2 clearly noticable) in the organ, as well the guitar... have similar problems with some other Tone Poet releases (f.e. Bobby Hutcherson). Btw, there's nothing wrong with my high end, stable performing stereo setup. Though certainly made (or aiming) on a high quality level, these releases are not flawless. Well it remains analogue -always imperfect- ;-) The music and performance is fantastic nevertheless! Hell groovy'
